About Us

The HydroLogic Group specializes in the analysis of spatial data, creating maps and
generating web pages. Our interests include watersheds, wetlands, upland prairies, oak savannahs, biodiversity, ecological integrity, open space, and habitat connectivity.
We emphasize the relevance and importance of these issues through the analysis and visualization of spatial data.

GIS Analysis samples:

We are doing spatial analysis of the Coast Fork Willamette Watershed to evaluate the condition of the watershed.

We did the GIS analysis for the Lower Middle Fork Willamette Watershed .

We produced the Ecoregion Map of Lane County for The Native Plant Society of Oregon, Emerald Chapter for inclusion in an upcoming publication.

We have the capability to convert planimetric/topographic information into "3D" shaded relief images. An example of a bathymetric map is shown for Waldo Lake, Oregon

Located in the Oregon Cascades at 5,248' elevation, Waldo is one of the purest lakes in the world.
The bathymetric map on the right was created from the image on the left.

Much of what we do involves combining data from several different sources and in different formats. The Oak Savannah page is an example of an aerial photograph merged with a USGS topographic map and a vector layer of roads.

Map samples:

We created over 50 shaded relief maps for the soon to be published
Mountain Bike Ride Guide for Lane County, second edition,
by Dan Geiger and Keith Nelson.

Here is the Index Map for the book:

See the Guide Book for details

There are sample images of 1 Cummins Creek; 3 Ridgeline Trail; 5/6 Shotgun Creek;
20
Alpine Trail; 21 Aubrey Mtn ; 23 Dead Mtn; 30 Blair Lake; 34 Waldo Lake;
36 Chucksney Trail; 42 O'Leary Trail.

We helped to develop the brochure: Track Town, USA, A Runner's Map for Eugene/Springfield Oregon

These trifold 11" x 17" maps are available free in and around Eugene, Oregon at various running outlets, Visitor Centers, and at the Prefontaine display at the airport.

Click in the image for a larger image (98KB). Here's the title page and description of running in the Eugene/Springfield area.

We created the map for a portion of the Eugene to Pacific Crest Trail that was used on the 15km race T-shirts:

  Web Page Design :

We created several maps for the Benton County Parks Department and developed the
Benton County Parks Web Page which combined the maps with management plans, historical information, facilities rental, etc.

  About Us

The HydroLogic Group, located in Jasper, Oregon, is directed by me, Jim Reed.

As an aquatic ecologist, I have worked on many different systems and topics including:
freshwater ponds at Barrow, Alaska for my Masters;
salt marshes near Woods Hole for my Ph.D.; large riverine systems in Ohio;
mesocosms in ponds; large estuarine systems in North Carolina;
endangered Steller's Sealions in Southeast Alaska; and monitored turbidity
of freshwater streams for violations of the Clean Water Act in Oregon.

I received my Masters in Biology, from University of Cincinnati in 1974; and my Ph.D. in Marine Science
with a minor in Biomathematics from North Carolina State Unversity in 1981 for research performed at the Ecosystems Center in Woods Hole, MA. Many of my mapping, GIS, remote sensing classes were taken at the internationally famous Department of Geography at the University of Oregon.

In my consulting work, I use a variety of programs including:

  • Mapinfo
  • ArcView
  • Map Publisher
  • Splus / R for Spatial statistics
  • Idrisi and Envi for remote sensing
  • Photoshop
  • Freehand / Illustrator
  • Bryce for 3D fly through animations

I have produced map products, GIS data or scientific data for different groups including:

  • Middle Fork Willamette Watershed Council
  • Coast Fork Willamette Watershed Council
  • Eugene to Pacific Crest Trail
  • Oregon Track Club in Eugene
  • McKenzie River Run Ultra-marathon
  • Petersburg, Alaska Marine Mammal Center
  • Friends of Buford Park
  • Western Environmental Law Center
  • Benton County, Oregon Parks
  • Native Plant Society of Oregon, Lane County Chapter
  • Chris Orsinger..
  • Doug Quirk ..

Associates of the "HydoLogic Group" vary as needed by the different projects.
I work with fisheries ecologists, watershed specialists, hydrologists, graphic artists, and open space planners.

Our fee structure is modest and varies according to my interest in the project.
We often work "pro bono" for groups working to protect our environment.
Contact
me to discuss your special needs.
