Perry was born on March 18, 1998 in Langley, B.C., Canada, sold as a puppy, and grew up in Redmond, Oregon. His owner raised him until he was 10 months old, then she sold him to Sgt. Carlson(Ret.). As a young dog, Perry displayed excellent genetic traits and passed many tests that older police dogs perform before they are selected for training. Perry's training started immediately in the dog sport of schutzhund. Within a short period of time he was also running the agility course and doing spirited obedience. Perry is also training as a narcotics detection dog.
On April 16, 2000 Perry received a BH title in schutzhund which demonstrates obedience and sound temperament. Then on May 27, 2000 he entered the Pacific Northwest Regional Championship in Snohomish, Washington and obtained his Sch I title from Canadian Judge Doug Deacon. On December 2, 2000 Perry entered the Santiam Valley Schutzhund club trial in Turner, Oregon and obtained his Sch II title from German Judge Franz Dorr. And on March 31, 2001 Perry entered the trial of the O.G. Oregon Schutzhund Assc. in Albany, Oregon and received his Sch III title from USA Judge Al Kerr. Perry has always received the rating of pronounced for courage and hardness. He is an excellent retriever and has a solid temperament for doing school demonstrations with children. In addition to Schutzhund training Perry was also training for the following police service dog activities:
On August 5, 2001 Perry officially became a police service K9 for the Springfield Police Department with Officer Rick Smith. The new team completed four weeks of basic police dog training and Oregon Police Canine Association patrol dog performance standards before being assigned to the Morning Watch shift. K9 Perry got his first capture on the way to his first night at work. A suspect involved in assaulting his wife had run and hid in a field and K9 Perry located him without incident. Within weeks K9 Perry also captured two suspects running from a stolen vehicle. And in 2003 Perry & Rick won the K9 competition in Bend, Oregon.

Officer Tony DelCastillo and Perry began training on August 1, 2004, completed OPCA Patrol Dog standards and Proficiency standards for Article Search & Agility on August 19th, and deployed on September 1st, 2004. Their first capture together was on September 3rd. Perry lives at home with Tony and his wife.

Perry and Tony won the Top Dog Award at the 10th Springfield K9 Competition.

From the SPD News Letter February 2010
On a sad note K9 Perry was euthanized on January 25th after developing a large tumor. Perry was raised and trained by Sgt. Carlson ( Ret.). Initially he was handled by Officer Smith but worked most of his career with Tony DelCastillo. Perry was responsible for 126 arrests and the recovery of over $44,500 in property. However he will mostly be remembered for his gentle personality. He was a great ambassador for the K9 unit in our schools. Perry retired January 2008 and spent his retirement with Tony and Tina.
