K-9 Andy was born in Czechoslovakia and trained in an International dog sport similar to Schutzhund known as I.P.O., and he has attained an I.P.O. II title. K-9 Andy was imported by Adlerhorst Kennels in Riverside, California where he was tested and purchased by the Springfield Police Department. In Springfield, K-9 Andy and Sergeant Roberts completed an intensive two-week training course taught by Sergeant Carlson. This course was designed to modify the dogs training from sport competition to a street working K-9. At the conclusion of the training, K-9 Andy and Sergeant Roberts passed the minimum standards certification requirements established by the Oregon Police Canine Association.
K-9 Andy's first day on patrol was September 25, 1992 and was performing well on the street and acquiring "street sense" as more time passed. He is an 85-pound dark brown and red sable German Shepherd, very alert and inquisitive, and uses his olfactory senses to the fullest potential. On September 4, 1995 at 0030 hrs. Sgt. Roberts & Andy assisted the Oregon State Police on Hwy 58 & Cloverdale Rd. searching for a fleeing felon. K-9 Andy tracked through water, over fences, and across fields to find the suspect hiding in a tree. During the deployment Sgt. Roberts was pulled off balance and fell breaking his collarbone. K-9 Andy was reassigned to Sgt. Carlson for the remainder of their careers.
K-9 Andy has found suspects hiding between false walls in bathrooms, in crawl spaces under apartment buildings, in culverts under roadways, and in the water. He found a barricaded burglar and seized him until the officers could make a safe forced entry into the room and take the suspect into custody. He has been in competition with other police canine and taken first place in the agility course, area search, and suspect apprehension. In 1997 Sgt. Carlson & Andy received the Top Team trophy at the annual police competition. Before retirement K9 Andy was the first dog to pass the Advanced Patrol Dog Standards established by the Oregon Police Canine Association. K-9 Andy has apprehended 63 suspects during his career that involved recovered property valued at $20,790.00.
Since his retirement Andy has received two Schutzhund I titles with the highest tracking score in both trials, Schutzhund II with a 100 point tracking score, and two Schutzhund III titles. His scores were SchH I-271, SchH II-272, SchH III-273.
